How to Have a Steady Heart in an *Unsteady World

Ever have something happen that seemed to rock your world and leave you spinning?

My world's been rocked so many times, I wonder how the earth is still properly balanced.

My response to a "world-rocking" event would begin with fear. That usually developed into anger or self-defensiveness or self-pity. One of those "self" things. It was miserable.

I bet you know that feeling.

And finally, my eyes would turn back to God. Every time I turned back to Him, I could feel my unbalanced world beginning to right itself.

Maybe my circumstances didn't change right away, but as my perspective did, so did my mind and heart.

Maybe I still didn't have the answer, but I was looking at the One who had it. As my faith and focus returned to its rightful place, my heart once again became steady (or steady-er).

When things happen... like a bad diagnosis from the doctor, a betrayal by a spouse or friend, or just when the whole month or year has been challenging...

...that's when we find out what our foundation is.

...that's when we find out what we're really trusting in.

Foundation, Focus, & Future

If we are going to maintain a steady or steadfast heart, our Foundation must be built in Jesus Christ. Period.

Nothing else is "unshakable."

Once we begin building a solid foundation, our Focus must also be fixed on Christ.

For if we take intentional steps to build our Foundation............

and we take care to Focus the eyes of our hearts on Him.............

then we can be assured that no matter what happens, no matter what someone says or does, and no matter what news comes to unsettle us..............

we will know that our Future is secure.

Guarding Your Heart

Above all else, guard your heart,
    for everything you do flows from it.
Keep your mouth free of perversity;
    keep corrupt talk far from your lips.
Let your eyes look straight ahead;
    fix your gaze directly before you.
Give careful thought to the paths for your feet
    and be steadfast in all your ways.
Do not turn to the right or the left;
    keep your foot from evil. - Proverbs 4:23-27

4 steps to Guarding Your Heart

  1. Watch over your words. Let no perverse or corrupt talk flow from your lips, and I would add no negative or fearful talking. If you want the best, you need to speak words of faith. Remember, you create what you speak!

  2. Focus your life on truth. Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. When our lives are focused on the problem or we're staring at the circumstance we want to change - then our hearts become more fearful and discouraged. But when we focus on Jesus, our hearts become encouraged and mental clarity is restored!

  3. Focus your eyes "directly ahead" and "fix your gaze" on Jesus! (You'll get better with practice.) You will walk in whatever direction you're focused on, so focus on the destination you want!

  4. Finally, we want to give "careful thought to the paths of our feet" - to think about our direction and where we're going. Be intentional to choose your direction, and focus there, for that is where you'll end up.

If you're unsure about your direction, go back to steps 1 and 2:

What are you speaking? What are you focused on?

If your words and focus aren't including Jesus, then it's time to pray, speak words of praise or thanks, and refocus on Him and re-establish your path.

You Can Be a Leader Who Lights the Way

Just like any professional athlete will tell you... with practice comes strength.

And with practice, come habits that shape your life.

When it's our habit to meet with God daily and study His Word, that habit strengthens and steadies us. We find that we are less shaken by the circumstances around us and our focus returns to God more quickly. We become steadied and others are drawn to our leadership.

We live in uncertain times so who is going to be the light (Matthew 5:16) that shows the way?

It will be people like you who have spent time with God, whose hearts are steady and whose focus is fixed on Him. After all, "the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:7)."

What practice has helped you become more steady? Please leave a comment that can help others!
