Find Spiritual Healing Through Self-Forgiveness
Do you strive for perfection but always come up a bit short? To constantly feel like a failure is depressing. For years I felt I could never be good enough to please Jesus.
My friend there is hope! To my great joy, I have learned feelings feel very real, but do not have to dictate my behavior or determine who I become. I have a choice. Feelings do not predicate reality.
I Love You in the Midst of Your Dirt
Whenever I missed the mark, I thought God was angry with me. I saw myself as a failure beyond His love.
One day the Lord said, “Barbara, you were made out of dust; dust gets dirty. I love you in spite of your dirt.”
Opening my Bible, I read, “As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him; for He knows our frame; He remembers we are dust.” (Ps. 103:13-14).
In His compassion, He not only understood me but He expected me to get dirty. He wasn’t angry when I got dirty.
That was amazing. I felt I had no value because I kept failing. But that was okay. The Heavenly Father still loved me! Now when I fail, when I sin, I don’t have to try to earn His love or appease His anger.
When the Lord looks at us- He recognizes our composition is such we will continually get dirty. We are made of dust. Sin is a sign of our humanity and of our need for a Saviour who is pure.
I no longer plummeted into depression, for the Lord is like a Daddy who has deep compassion for his little one. When his child falls, he lovingly picks up the little one and tenderly comforts him.
In the Lord’s great mercy, He removes my sins from me and redeems my life from destruction, for He is slow to wrath; He does not reward us according to our iniquities or failures.
An Important Principle
Even as the Lord sanctified Israel, who the Egyptians mockingly called “the dusty ones”, He will sanctify our dust if we yield ourselves to Him. He delights in cleansing us and transforming us, who are “the dusty ones”, into mighty warriors who triumph over sin.
Let us learn to die to lies that hold us into Self. Think about it. Who programmed Self? Jesus, the Righteous One is pure and holy. Nothing selfish originates from Him.
The lie did not originate with you. Deep down, you long to be like Jesus. But you believe lies because they feel real. Deceived by feelings, you sin.
The unclean in us emanates from the Evil one. The enemy of our soul programs the Self. As we believe lies, we empower the demonic to manipulate us and program our feelings to believe what we feel is truth.
Most of us who love Jesus live by our feelings. I did. Those feelings drove me to make foolish decisions, even as they robbed me of hope.
The Bible teaches when the blood of Jesus touched my vessel of dirt, He made me clean. Born of the Spirit, I have a new programmer. The Holy Spirit has begun the process of transforming me by giving me a new life, with the ability to choose truth over my feelings. I have learned to ask if my feelings are genuine emotions or lies to make me captive to failure. That has brought incredible freedom in Jesus.
When you feel depressed, dirty and worthless, those are feelings. Feelings lie to you. Scientific studies show feelings can rise from your reptilian brain, based on lies you learned as a little one. When you choose to think with the mind of Christ – you move you out of the reactivity and powerlessness of the reptilian brain into your cortex – where the Spirit empowers you to choose life.
Learn to Forgive Yourself
You were formed out of dust. Dust gets dirty. Give yourself grace. The Lord died to forgive you. It is time to forgive yourself.
The Heavenly Father hates sin but He is not angry with you. He isn’t annoyed when you do something silly. He is gentle. He offers you hope. He has made provision for your weakness and your need to be cleansed. Because of Calvary, He offers you forgiveness.
Receive His forgiveness. You may not feel worthy. But Jesus is worthy; He died so you might be forgiven.
Choose to forgive yourself. You are made from dust. You will get dirty. You daily need to be cleansed. Allow Jesus to forgive you and the blood of Jesus to cover you. Choose Jesus. Choose to step into the truth of your position as a beloved child of the Lord.
Forgiveness opens the door to becoming an Overcomer. This process is developed as you gain a new perspective where your focus is on the Lord Jesus who loves you. He has made a way of escape from your past. As you fall in love with Him, Jesus begins to set you free from feelings that deceive you.
He, who is Truth, will break the shackles of depression. Begin to forgive yourself. Receive His cleansing. As you walk in truth, you will experience deeper healing and grow in His love.
