Stop saying “God is in control”!
Friends, I’m going out on a limb with this one, but I’m going to back up what I say with scripture, so bear with me. (Feel free to leave a comment after this 5-minute read.)
I was sharing a prayer request with a friend recently, and in an attempt to reassure me, she said, “Well, God is in control. It will be alright.”
I thanked her for her encouragement, but said to myself, “No, I’m afraid that’s just not so. If that’s true, then everything that happens is because God wanted it to happen. That would mean that many times He goes against His own Words about good and evil, about whether He’s protecting us or not. God would never do that because ‘He is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow.'” (Hebrews 13:8)
Many times, this statement, “God is in control” is an excuse for Christians to do nothing – meaning holding back from using the Word and prayer in order to change things that need changing. It can be a way of justifying our not getting involved. Let’s face it; much of the Church seems to be in a sleeping state with regard to what believers should be doing. Some appear to be trapped in time living the same day over and over much like Bill Murray in the movie Ground Hog Day.
What did Jesus say?
Right before Jesus ascended into Heaven, He told the disciples, men and women who had been following and learning from Him, “All authority (all power of absolute rule) in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. ” – Matthew 28:18 AMP. Jesus was pretty clear about it. He told those present that He was now delegating that authority to them. He’d been teaching them to ask the Father for things “in My name”, to heal the sick “in My name”, and to cast out demons “in My name”, meaning to do it in His power and authority as the Son of God. Then ascending to Heaven, He sat down at the right hand of the Father; His work was finished!
It’s Jesus’ finished work that makes restoration possible, and with the giving of the Holy Spirit, believers are enabled and empowered to live and breathe in His authority, pray in His name, and bring the Gospel of the Kingdom of Heaven into the earth. Translation: we are the current delegates who are to make the earth look as much like Heaven as possible while we are increasingly being changed into His image.
Jesus said that His followers (you and I) would do the same things and even greater things that He had done. This means we are to walk in His authority carrying out the instructions of the Father (as He did) in healing the sick, giving sight to the blind, raising the dead, bringing justice for the oppressed, and ultimately changing the culture, that being us. You and I following the leading of the Father. (I’ve not raised anyone from the dead yet, but I hope to be used in that way. Wouldn’t that knock your socks off?!) And your race, gender, background, family, etc? None of that matters! You can do whatever God calls you to do! You have permission from Him to be the woman or man, girl or boy, that God has created you to be!
God is Sovereign and thus is ultimately in control, but He longs to partner with us to accomplish His will on earth. “The heavens belong to the Lord, but the earth He has given to the children of men.” (Psalm 115:16)
We are the flesh-and-blood Kingdom of Heaven representatives on earth. And as long as we are living, we are to be loving, giving, serving, healing, teaching, mentoring, discipling, and every single thing that Jesus taught His disciples to do. As the Holy Spirit leads, and in His name.
Christianity is much more than being saved and going to Heaven. It’s more than attending Church on Sundays. It’s way more than just taking life like it is and spiritually hiding out, as some do!
If you’re a follower of Jesus, guess what?
You were made for more! The making of disciples is the teaching of believers on how to learn, believe, and obey Jesus’ words, how to be transformed by the truth, and walk out this life IN the power and authority that He won back for us on the cross.
Today, in His name, we have that same authority to use under the guidance of the Holy Spirit and we have the same assignment that God gave to Adam and Eve in the beginning – to go out as His image bearers and make the planet look like Heaven! He will equip and empower us to carry out His will, in Jesus’ name!
So, is God really in control?
It depends on what you mean by that. If you mean that He is Sovereign, God of gods, King of kings, and Lord of lords, then yes! He is all powerful and nothing is greater than He is. But if you say it so that you can relax and not step up to the spiritual plate to bring change, help someone, or pray declarations over your city, then you’re missing out on the God-adventure. You’re missing out on knowing what that all-powerful God can do through you!
Dear one, God will never make you do anything. He has given each of us free will to choose. And the sad part is that most people just want to be saved, but they don’t want to walk in the fullness of who they are created to be.
The word for Church in Greek is ecclesia, meaning a governing body. We are to be a spiritually governing body of believers that bring positive change. This requires faith. Believers, by definition, are to believe.
My heart is praying for an awakened and vibrant Church who…
- truly knows the Father,
- is fed up with the status quo,
- wants to see the Body of Christ walk in active truth,
- wants to change every area of culture, and
- walk in the authority of Jesus to bring Heaven to earth.
God is ready to empower us as His children to carry out amazing things. We need to learn to believe for more because we were made for more! Want to join me on the God-adventure of a lifetime?
Join me in a prayer:
Our Father, who is in Heaven, hallowed is your name.
May your Kingdom come and your will be done
ON EARTH AS IT IS IN HEAVEN.
And Father, help me to learn to walk into maturity as your child.
Help me learn to follow the leading of the Holy Spirit and obey as Jesus did.
I want to bring Heaven to earth where I am.
In Jesus’ name! Amen!
I think I smell the fragrance of Heaven!
From the desk by the window where…you know…this bird is blessed under the tall pines!
